Communication Essential Notes

  1. Under promise, over deliver.
  2. People like people who are similar.
  3. People in southern part of US are slow in speaking.  Very urgent /fast in NY side.
  4. How well we communicate is determined not by how well we say things but by how well we are understood. - Andy Grove, Intel.
  5. Don't be the prisoner of past but pioneer of future.
  6. Communication - 22% of reading, writing + 23% of speaking + 55% of listening.
  7. Assertiveness - Standing up for your rights without violating the rights of others - Carol Price.
  8. Assertiveness - There is a loud music - 80% wouldn't ask.  15% requested but only once.  5% asked again.
  9. How we listen:  Ignore, Pretend we're listening -> Selectively listen ->  Attend in our listening ->  Listen with empathy.
  10. Listening -> Acknowledgement (empathy) ->  Confirmation (Yes, I hear you) -> Reflective Listening (If I hear you correctly, what you are saying...").
  11. Non-Verbal -> Nodding your head, Leaning forward in your seat, Making eye contact, Taking Notes, Smiling.
  12. Closed Vs Open Questions:  Closed questions answers either yes or no.  Not an opportunity for dialogue.  e.g., was the project successful.  Open questions are appropriate when engaging the other person in a dialogue.  e.g., How did the new process impact the teams results?
